چکیده

This chapter reviews the differential geometry-based solvation and electrolyte transport for biomolecular solvation that have been developed over the past decade. A key component of these methods is the differential geometry of surfaces theory, as applied to the solvent-solute boundary. In these approaches, the solvent-solute boundary is determined by a variational principle that determines the major physical observables of interest, for example, biomolecular surface area, enclosed volume, electrostatic potential, ion density, electron density, etc. Recently, differential geometry theory has been used to define the surfaces that separate the microscopic (solute) domains for biomolecules from the macroscopic (solvent) domains. In these approaches, the microscopic domains are modeled with atomistic or quantum mechanical descriptions, while continuum mechanics models (including fluid mechanics, elastic mechanics, and continuum electrostatics) are applied to the macroscopic domains. This multiphysics description is integrated through an energy functional formalism and the resulting Euler-Lagrange equation is employed to derive a variety of governing partial differential equations for different solvation and transport processes; e.g., the Laplace-Beltrami equation for the solvent-solute interface, Poisson or Poisson-Boltzmann equations for electrostatic potentials, the Nernst-Planck equation for ion densities, and the Kohn-Sham equation for solute electron density. Extensive validation of these models has been carried out over hundreds of molecules, including proteins and ion channels, and the experimental data have been compared in terms of solvation energies, voltage-current curves, and density distributions. We also propose a new quantum model for electrolyte transport. ∗Department of Mathematics, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Michigan State University, MI 48824, USA. Modeling the Transport and Volumetric Properties of Solutions Containing Polymer and Electrolyte with New Model

A new theoretical model based on the local composition concept (TNRF-mNRTL model) was proposed to express the short-range contribution of the excess Gibbs energy for the solutions containing polymer and electrolyte. This contribution of interaction along with the long-range contribution of interaction (Pitzer-Debye-Hückel equation), configurational entropy of mixing (Flory-Huggins relation)...

Differential geometry based solvation model. III. Quantum formulation.

Solvation is of fundamental importance to biomolecular systems. Implicit solvent models, particularly those based on the Poisson-Boltzmann equation for electrostatic analysis, are established approaches for solvation analysis. However, ad hoc solvent-solute interfaces are commonly used in the implicit solvent theory. Recently, we have introduced differential geometry based solvation models whic...

Numerical analysis of reactant transport in the novel tubular polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

In present work, numerical analysis of three novel PEM fuel cells with tubular geometry was conducted. Tree different cross section was considered for PEM, namely: circular, square and triangular. Similar boundary and operational conditions is applied for all the geometries. At first, the obtained polarization curve for basic architecture fuel cells was validated with experimental data and then...

Modeling of Nanofiltration for ‎Concentrated Electrolyte Solutions using ‎Linearized Transport Pore Model

In this study, linearized transport pore model (LTPM) is applied for modeling nanofiltration (NF) membrane separation process. This modeling approach is based on the modified extended Nernst-Planck equation enhanced by Debye-Huckel theory to take into account the variations of activity coefficient especially at high salt concentrations. Rejection of single-salt (NaCl) electrolyte is inve...
